What does burying a black cat symbolize?

Normally, black cats can symbolize anything from death, to prosperity, to bad luck, etc... But today i buried a black cat that died on the side of a road (yes i try to be kind to animals even though i can be an ***) and wondered afterward, what that symbolized, or represented. please, no christian folklore.
